Ship Names

Postby Sealurk » Fri Feb 12, 2016 9:50 pm

Probably the single most requested feature and spawner of a thousand threads - but to my knowledge not yet addressed on ARC-HQ!

So, what - if anything - do you call your ships, and why?

  1. Vulture - Nekhbet, Vulture-headed goddess in Egyptian mythology
  2. Federal Assault Ship - Thunder Child, because a) I'm a major War of the Worlds fan, b) it's an awesome name and c) my FAS is also a deceptively fast, heavily armoured warship that rams targets
  3. Asp - Cleo, short for Cleopatra because I couldn't think of anything terribly original
  4. Cobra Mk III - Naja, scientific name for the true cobras
  5. Python - Atlas, because it's a heavy lifter
  6. Type-6 - Tamland, because it's a brick

There's a storm coming. Soon the whole of Humanity shall be united against a common foe. Are you really going to tempt fate by facing a Thargoid invasion in a ship called the "Thunder Child"?

Hey, at least I'll be saving refugees while doing it - hopefully most of them will be singing "Come on Thunder Child!".

We'll, um, gloss over the whole "flashing Heat Rays pierced the deck" bit...

I name my ships after people and events in history that few people know about, but should be better known because of the major impact they had. See how many of these you recognise :)

Gold Sidewinder - Mary Seacole
Imperial Eagle - Ada Lovelace
Chrome Cobra (mkIII) - Thomas Newcomen
Asp - Robert Fitzroy

Vulture - Stamford Bridge
Fer de Lance - Ellandun
Python - Epiphany Rising

The only one of those I came close to knowing was Ada Lovelace, and the extent of my knowledge is that she had something do with the Charles Babbage and/or something of importance to (early) computers.

I feel I should recognise Robert Fitzroy and Stamford Bridge but honestly, history was never my subject, so apparently I'm doomed to repeat it. Maybe I'll get a higher grade this time around.

EDIT: Having now looked up the names and their meanings, I have to comment on just how appropriate some of them are. I love the theme of the combat ship names, and the excellent choice for the Asp. I'm going to rep you on the FD forums for them!

Seacole was involved in the Crimean war, Fitzroy was navy but preferred science, Stamford Bridge was a battle before Hastings which Harold won.

The rest I don't have a clue

I don't have any ship names. My python is called "Python". But if I did, I would name them after cartoon characters and my favourite flavours of ice cream.

Well at least it isn't 'Monty'. There's probably a few thousand ships registered with that name, though John, Graham, Eric, Terry (x2) and Michael could be acceptable alternatives. The last one in particular is very biblical and also the name of probably the most realistic space warship in science fiction.

I am definitely not thinking about changing my Python's name from Atlas to Norwegian Blue.
