Asp: Yay or Nay?

Postby Sealurk » Wed Jul 22, 2015 11:27 am

I currently have the following ships:

  • Vulture (dedicated combat ship)
  • Type 6 (dedicated trader)
  • Cobra (all-rounder, potential smuggler and/or miner)
I'm seriously considering buying an Asp, but I can't decide whether to have it replace one of those vessels (okay, not the Vulture) or in addition to them, or whether it would be a waste of creds. At some point I would like to try exploration, but that could be in a few months to a year. So, my questions are:

  1. How does the Asp fair as a trading vessel?
  2. How does the Asp do in combat?
  3. Is it useful for smuggling or mining?
  4. How expensive is it to run?
My funds are currently at roughly 23,000,000 Cr, so I can afford to upgrade it a little upon purchase but not much - however I may be trading in either the Type 6 or possibly the Cobra when I buy it to lessen the blow. Thoughts? Comments?

I had an Asp when I was exploring. I loved it. I was surprised how cheap it was to outfit and run. I did do a bit of trading and combat as well and was pleasantly surprised at how well it did both. As an explorer, I think it is the best of all ships and pretty good at everything else.

Get one, you'll love it too.

(I'd trade in the Type 6 though. Vulture in indispensable and the Cobra is just too nice to loose)

That's good to know. I was considering swapping the Type 6 for an Asp and fitting it as a trader to begin with (albeit one with teeth that doesn't just have to run if its interdicted) and then upgrading it as an exploration ship once my funds are sufficient.

The Cobra is definitely staying. Even if I end up having no real use for it, it's staying!

Agree with Dayrth.... sell the Type 6 and get the Asp.... can take care of itself and great for exploring.... Never had one but have read enough posts on it to see that it is well liked.

Definitely, ASP is better trading ship than Type6 - more cargo space, longer jump range, I can't see any pros for Type6 against ASP. Moreover, ASP allow you to take a break from trading and do some bounty hunt or combat zones when you feel like it. It seems, ASP is able to smuggle or mining, however I never did it myself. Sell your Type6 and get ASP without any doubts.

Just bought an Asp to open up my options for doing delivery missions. I only wish it would stop moving in a particular direction as quickly as my Vulture!! Will have to get used to that! :D

Yep, the Vulture can stop in a heartbeat and turn on a dime (10p piece?). Big ships have a lot more inertia to overcome, as I've found out when trying to land my Type 6 at speed. If there were actually NPCs wandering around space stations I think I would have been able to see every freckle on the faces of dock hands on some of my landings... mainly because they would be plastered across my canopy like the teddy bear from Babylon 5.

:D :D :D
Yes, I know what you mean! Getting used to her now. Had to go all the way to CD-34 9020 and Zaonce to fit her out but she's handling better...actually... quite nice in fact.
Lousy weapon hardpoints but then I'm hoping not to have to use them!!! Currently docked at Camaitsogo, Brackett Ring. Alliance faction at the bottom of the heap...9%.
Maybe try to improve that. ;)

Just bought an Asp and spent a good chunk of my assets (about a third of my cred balance) on upgrading and outfitting it. Taken it out for a trial run... love it! Surprising handling for a ship of that size, pretty combat capable so far (still working on fine tuning the weapons load out - currently have 2x C2 Fixed Beam Lasers, 2x C1 Fixed Pulse Lasers and 2x C1 Gimballed Multi-cannons) and a fine trader. I think I'm going to break her in with a long shakedown cruise - major rares run to try and recoup a little of what I spent on her.

Now she just needs a livery upgrade and a name. Is Cleo too cliched?
